About the Course

Law Enforcement Training Course

The instructors bring a rare perspective to the class. Each instructor has been involved in  deadly force encounters with  armed attackers. Additionally, Detective Russell was shot while attempting to detain a subject. Detective Holt was stabbed trying to apprehend a mentally disturbed subject. These and other experiences give the instructors an unparalleled credibility. The instructors’ friendships and working relationship span more than twenty years. This interaction gives them a unique view from three distinct perspectives.

Law enforcement is dangerous and understanding the potential for a deadly encounter is imperative to every officer’s chance of surviving a combat situation.

The instructors will explore the physiological and psychological effects on the human body during and after a deadly force encounter. They will emphasize the importance of mental and physical preparedness. It is important to understand what your body will do when faced with an imminent threat of death or great bodily harm. This information will be shared with class members in an effort to prepare them for what to expect when their bodies go into protective mode. This knowledge could mean the difference between survival and death.

The instructors will talk about how physical training, mental imaging, tactical self-talk, combat breathing and centering improve stress inoculation, startle recovery and performance during a deadly force encounter.

“A warrior acts not reacts”. Reaction time for an officer is critical in a deadly for encounter. The instructors will explain how to prepare and utilize techniques, such as Air Force Colonel John Boyd’s OODA Loop (Observe, Orient, Decide, and Act).

Even when officers are prepared for deadly force encounters, many have never considered the aftermath. From internal affairs investigations, attacks by the press, threats from offenders, civil actions, and reactions from his/her own family and fellow officers, the instructors will cover how to respond during post-incident interactions and how to recognize and deal with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder both for themselves and their fellow officers.

The instructors will also explore the reasons persons chose law enforcement as a profession. They will discuss the development of warrior codes that have been refined and passed down for thousands of years and how the codes play a role in officer self-perception and how the codes guide their actions during day-to-day policing. Personal morals and codes of conduct, along with departmental rules and regulations, as well as state and federal laws, guide each officer’s actions. The instructors will discuss on police traning & why police officers are willing to be held to a higher standard than the public they serve, although they risk being investigated and face discipline for their actions during a deadly force encounter.

Finally, the class will discuss the police response to terrorist attacks and active shooter scenarios, perhaps the most traumatic and chaotic incidents an officer will face. Keeping a focused mindset and determining your goals in advance will assist in keeping officers from being overwhelmed during a traumatic incident.
